“Incorporating biodiversity in Colombia´s coffee sector” project in Quindío is evaluated

A progress assessment of the FNC led “Incorporating biodiversity in Colombia´s coffee sector” initiative, currently underway in the municipalities of Finlandia, Circasia and Quimbaya in the department of Quindío, was recently made. The audit began with a field trip which included a visit to the Maracay farm in the municipality of Quimbaya. Maracay is the place where the seeds and seedlings grown in the farms enrolled to the project are kept.

Mr. Jaime Echeverría and Ms. Natalia Arango from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) shared their experiences regarding the project´s results during its first two and a half years of operation.
According to Mr. Echeverría the national and international importance of coffee and the implemented crop management techniques, in terms of shade grown and cover techniques, imply great opportunities for the area. Additionally, he argued that these factors contribute to conserve UNESCO´s recognition of the Colombian Coffee Cultural Landscape as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
