Rural land title initiative for the department of Cauca is launched in the municipality of Timbío

Popayán, October 1st 2012. As part of the agreement signed between the FNC and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development –which will advance land titling in the coffee growing areas of the departments of Huila, Nariño and Cauca– the Rural Property Formalization in Cauca cooperation agreement was launched in the municipality of Timbío.

By December 2012, 5.700 coffee growing families of the municipalities of Popayán, Morales, Mercaderes, Buenos Aires, and Timbío in the department of Cauca are expectedto count with legal land titles. The agreement will be executed through the Coordination Unit of the Rural Ownership Formalization Program with the participation of the municipalities´ local governments, Cauca´s local government, and the Departmental Coffee Growers Committee of Cauca.

The local Departmental Coffee Growers Committee will cover the expenses of the Coffee Information System (SICA)´s images and the support provided by the Extension Service to the producers involved in the agreement.

The majority of the land to be legalized belongs to coffee producing families. Once the initiative is implemented, they will be able to access the benefits that correspond to legal land tenure such as agricultural aid, increased income, and a more active participation in the financial system. Similarly, by enabling coffee growers to have technologically advanced plantations and secure their property rights, land titling will stimulate and increase coffee production.
