AGREEMENT ESTABLISHED BETWEEN THE COFFEE GROWERS COMMITTEE AND THE SOUTHERN MUNICIPALITIES

Popayán. March 21, 2012. The mayors of the municipalities of Balboa, Argelia, Sucre, Patía, Bolívar, Florencia and Mercaderes held a meeting last weekend in which they decided to include the coffee sector in the development plans of their municipalities. The new coffee policy was very well received among local leaders, who highlighted the importance of coffee in the economy and development of their region.

Considering that coffee is a product with a guaranteed market, which assures the sustainability of Cauca´s rural area, the mayors undertook the establishment of 5000 new hectares in coffee and the renovation of 5000 additional hectares of coffee distributed among the seven municipalities. The coffee proposal will be submitted to the departmental administration in order to by analyzed and included in the department´s Development Plan.
Taking into account that the Departmental Coffee Growers Committee of Cauca aims to renovate 33 thousand hectares in the upcoming three years and increase the region´s coffee production, the municipal administrations’ support is a major achievement for the coffee sector.
