Agreements between the FNC, the IOM and the Natural Heritage will benefit 90 coffee growing families

The agreements between the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and Natural Heritage, will benefit 90 coffee growing families from the municipalities of Pueblo Bello and Valledupar in the “Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta” by implementing efficient ecological wet milling and coffee drying systems.

By fomenting the appropriate management of the coffee´s wet milling process and stimulating the reappearance of organic coffee growing, the projects will improve the quality of the beans and increase the income of beneficiary families. Additionally, besides encouraging coffee growers to give an appropriate decomposition treatment to the coffee´s byproducts during the harvest period, the initiatives will foment their use as fertilizers.
To be able to increase the productivity of aged coffee plantations, the projects will implement crop renovation measures with the support of the FNC´s Permanence Sustainability and Future program. Likewise, activities regarding water source recovery      by planting native species will be developed.

These initiatives intend to make coffee growers aware of the importance of producing under sustainable schemes that allow them to obtain high quality coffee, and therefore, increase their income.
