Manizales, April, 24/2012 (Departmental Coffee Growers Committee of Caldas)– For the second year in a row Colombian coffees achieved top positions in the Rainforest Alliance International Cupping for Specialty Coffees Competition. The winners of the competition were announced Friday April 20th during the Specialty Coffee Association of America´s annual tradeshow in Portland, Oregon.

Besides the municipalities of Supía and Aguadas from the department of Caldas, which won 3rd and 6th place respectively, the municipality of Caicedonia from Valle del Cauca achieved the 7th position.

The awarded coffees count with the Specialty Coffee Rainforest Alliance seal, which encourages the production of high quality coffee in harmony with natural resources and social matters; the Nespresso AAA seal, granted by the Nestlé multinational, which produces one of the finest gourmet coffees in the world; and the Fairtraid (FLO) seal.

“The awards recognize the effort of coffee growers that, with the support of the FNC’s Rural Extension Service, Municipal and Departmental Coffee Grower Committees, Coffee Grower Cooperatives, and organizations that promote specialty coffee seals, implement quality practices and economic, environmental, and social sustainability measures for coffee production. These practices grant value added to specialty coffees, and therefore, increase marketing opportunities, recognition, and future possibilities for coffee,” stated  Alfonso Ángel the Executive Director of the Departmental Coffee Growers Committee of Caldas.
