The FNC and KFW Bankengruppe fight erosion in the department of Antioquia

  • An initiative led by KFW Bankengruppe, Colombia´s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC).
  •  508 coffee growers from 8 municipalities of the department of Antioquia have been assisted by the “Forestry as an alternative means of production” program.

Medellín, September, 26, 2011.The program “Forestry as an alternative means of production,” headed by the FNC´s Departmental Coffee Growers Committee of Antioquia and supported by the German government, is a reforestation program that aims to maintain a sustainable coffee industry. In Antioquia, the program´s budget is US$2.417.935 for the reforestation of 6,644 hectares in farms belonging to 508 coffee growers from 8 municipalities of the province of Antioquia. This is equivalent to approximately 8% of the national total.

 The program is financed by Colombia´s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the FNC, and the Germangovernment through KFW Bankengruppe. The cooperation agreement between Colombia and Germany aims to reduce erosion in the main watersheds of the middle and upper basins of the Cauca and Magdalena Rivers, and to contribute to the stabilization of water source balance by increasing sustainable resource management and recovering and conserving endangered forests.
